PictureMy own pair of D'Orsay flats.
DIY Difficulty = Novice

D’Orsay Flats are extremely in this fall. D’Orsay styling means that the middle section of the shoe is cut-away, while the toebox and heel are closed. They can come with or without ankle straps. The versions sans the ankle strap are less horizontally cutting, especially when worn in low contrast colours against the skin tone. So, sometimes you find yourself on a student budget and you have to decide between a new pair of Jenni Kayne D’Orsay Flats or groceries.

But sometimes we can have our cake and eat it too (literally). So for this DIY project we are re-using! That is one of the great things about DIY, it is so environmentally friendly. DO NOT throw out your old flats, just re-vamp them for the 2013-2014 season. Not only are "D’Orsay Flats" very chic but they make your feet look petite and slimming (I have extremely veiny blistered feet, due to years and years of going sans socks in hockey skates, spikes and running shoes) but these flats seem to cover up all my problem areas quite nicely.

So for this project, you will need:
Old/New pair of flats
Scissors
Marker
Glue or clear nail polish
Another pair of open sided flats so you can use them as a model

First off, you have to make sure the toe part of the flat that you are using comes up far enough so that you can not see the creases between your toes. The next step is to place a line where you want to cut your flat. This is completely up to you. You can make the heel square shaped, or on a sever angle, I choose to curve my heels. I used my other D’Orsay flats as a "stencil" guide.

Now it's time for the fun part, cutting! Less is more, so do not go crazy cutting the shoes. You want to leave a little extra, try them on, then cut again. Basically it is up to your own preference, whatever you think will look best! You can use glue or clear nail polish to seal the edges if you'd like
And VOILA! A perfectly cute pair of D’Orsay flats! Wear them with jeans, leggings, skirts, dresses. And be happy that instead of throwing away a pair of shoes, you re-used something. Look at your go, you granola eating tree hugger you

Great work! But even if a DIY project isn't possible, shoes should NEVER be thrown away! They can always be recycled if too worn out to donate!
